Patriotic Treat Tips

Happy first day of July!  Need some ideas for some yummy treats for your family and friends?!  These can also be used for Memorial Day and Labor Day!

Flag Cake:  I have a sweet tooth and every year around this time I make a flag cake and a few other desserts like cake pops/balls.  I always thought flag cakes looked fun and after finding this recipe below by Chris Nease it has become a yearly tradition. I am a very visual person so that is one reason why I really like this recipe.  It has step by step directions and pictures of how to put together a flag cake.  Over the years as I have gotten better (constant improvement) at making this cake I have found a few tools to help.

A cake leveler helps to cut straight layers. You can just use a long sharp knife, which I did the first few times, but sometimes the layers can get a little crooked.  If that happens you can try to fix this by adding more or less cream cheese filling to even out the layers, but the cake leveler helps take this issue away! The Cake Leveler I use is only $1.89!

Another option is to buy thin cake pans instead of cutting them.  Here is a 5pc 6in set of pans and a 4pc 8in set.

Cake pops/balls: No one wants to waist cake, am I right?!?! So with the leftover pieces of cake that would otherwise get thrown away I make cake balls!  All you need is an extra can of cream cheese icing, a baggie to mix the cream cheese and the cake with and white chocolate melting pieces. You mix your leftover cake and cream cheese together in the baggie and then take about a spoonful and roll into balls.  Put them in the freezer to let them become more firm for about and hour.  Once done you melt the white chocolate chips or desired flavor/color and dip the balls into the chocolate and place them on a tray to harden.   You can use a microwavable safe bowl or a Candy Melting Pot.  If you are making cake pops you might want to have a   Cake Pop Press.  You can also add sprinkles for an extra touch!  This year I've bought plastic Cake Pop Sticks ($1.75) to make them more like a lolly pop and a Cake Pop Stand ($2.41) to help them dry!   Cake Pops/Balls are a fun way to express your creative side for holidays and parties so I have included 34 Amazing Cake Pop Recipes and you can see a few examples below from there!
